Step One

Today I took step one in getting myself out of debt. I paid off the card with the smallest balance. Granted, it was only $215 and truly a drop in the bucket when compared to the total amount of debt, but at least it’s a step in the right direction. Now I can take the twenty-five dollar minimum payment I was making each month towards another card, one with a higher interest rate and higher balance.

And what grand gesture of sacrifice did I have to make in order to make that payment? I cooked grilled chicken and vegetables for dinner two nights this week instead of getting takeout or ready prepared food from the supermarket. In other words, I didn’t make any sacrifice. I simply made a decision to redirect. I know that paying off all the cards won’t be that easy, but getting one paid off still feels like huge victory.

Now I’m off to put that credit card into a Ziploc bag, fill it with water, and put it into the freezer. So I won’t be tempted to use it and my husband won’t know where to find it.
