I just finished reading Eat Pray Love. I am sad to say that I did not have the life changing reaction to this book that many of my girlfriends had. I liked it enough; the writing was simple, the chapters were short and the reading was fast. However, as a self professed atheist, I had a hard time with her “search for god”, even if the god in the book was the lower-case god (the idea of a higher power, possibly even within oneself) as opposed to THE God from the bible or Koran etc.
As a book that was written in the first person about a very personal search for inner peace, I felt that her character did not reveal itself to me. One reason could be the almost complete lack of any personal history to describe WHY her marriage failed, WHY she was at war with herself...I felt that I needed to more of her history to understand the flow of her story and get to know her and anticipate her reactions.
This book may appeal to some who have a belief in some kind of god or who are deeply spiritual. As for me, I finished it with some difficulty and was tempted at every turn to give up and start reading a science journal or a biology text book.
