Sensory Clothing and Weight Blanket

For a mother whose sensational child has both tactile and vestibular issues, a place like Prince's Sensory Delight is a gem. Now, I know there are a lot of places online that cater to the needs of our kids, and many more of them are emerging that do specialize in clothing that wont “itch” or “tickle”, but they have a certain charm that makes them stand out.

First, the clothing is to-die-for adorable. They remind me of the type of clothing that my grandmother (a seamstress) or my mother (an amateur seamstress) would have made for me by hand when I was a girl.
Prince's Sensory Delight specializes in high quality children's clothing targeting those with Autism, Asperger’s, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Dyspraxia, Downs Syndrome, ADHD, Developmental Delay and more.
They carry everything from baby clothing, compression garments, elastic waist pants which are lined with a velvety soft waistband and cuffs.

Their pants can be weighted. Each pair of pants comes with an external pocket and an internal pocket, both can be used for additional proprioceptive weights to help promote calmness, alertness and spatial orientation. All garments are tag less.

They also have seamless socks, which are a huge find, at least for me.

Some weeks my son can't wear any socks and sometimes he lives in them because the carpet is too "scratchy".
Their vests, which are also made of the same tactile sensory soft material, have an outside pocket for weights. And talk about adorable.

At first when I approached my son about trying on the clothes, he was skeptical. They didn't look like most of the clothes he wears. But he was willing to give them a try. Usually, anything new for him is a treat. His initial reaction was, "These look funny, mom." I encouraged him to try them on, and he did. I asked him how they felt and he replied, "Good." A short but sweet word for my son. I waited for his reaction. The wrenched face that he gives when his jeans are too itchy or too long didn't appear. He didnt seem to be pulling at the legs as if to get them off of his skin. Success!

He LOVED the matching vest with the hidden pockets for additional weights. The added benefit of having Velcro fasteners was a huge bonus. Although he has improved his fine motor skills with OT, buttons are still sometimes an issue. This vest eliminates that trouble spot for kids.

We were provided with one weight to try with the clothes and once the vest was on him and he admired his new look, I added the weight to the outside pocket (There are 5 additional pockets hidden inside the vest for more weights). With the weight added, his whole demeanor changed. He grinned and said, "I like it mom. Look, I look like Woody from Toy Story."

I know from experience that my son instantly calms down or seems at peace when any weighted product is used. It was cool to know that this could be a way for me to get him some proprioceptive input at school without anyone knowing, which is a sore spot for him. The last thing he wants is for any of his friends to know he needs a tool at school to help him concentrate.

All of the clothes are awesome and fun to try on for both of my boys, but the real fun began when I showed my son the weighted blanket!

We have a weighted lap pad for him, which we use during homework and he also takes it to OT with him. He has never had trouble sleeping, but I decided to let him try the 6 lbs weighted blanket. The blanket measures 40” X 48” and can be used separately or Prince’s offer three removable covers.

He sat through a half hour show with the blanket on and then removed it to sit and do homework. I was impressed with how calm and focused he was. The lap pad is still useful, but I see a much greater use for the larger blanket. Its the perfect size for a kids throw blanket and can we kept on the couch for quick access  when needed. It could also be useful as a sleeping blanket for a small child. The covers are wonderfully soft one side and have a smooth denim cotton fabric on the other side. The child who likes various textures will have options.
