How Did You Find Out Santa Isn’t Real?
Part of the magic of Christmas is in believing that a jovial, pot-bellied man squeezes down the chimney on Christmas Eve bearing a sack of toys. Many of us can recall leaving cookies and milk out for St. Nicholas or lying in bed listening for the pitter-patter of reindeer hooves on the roof. Despite the power of a child’s imagination, there comes a time when every little boy and girl realizes that Old St. Nick is no more than a legendary folkloric character. Whether you noticed that Santa and your mom had suspiciously similar handwriting, or were told by another child at school, share with us: how did you find out Santa Claus isn’t real?

i actually experienced 2 totally unrelatted instances in about the same year. santa came to our church and eachof us gotto tell santa what we wanted for christmas. when i climbed onto santas lapi looked into his eyes and JUST happened to notice the RATHER large nose on his face. it was a man from our church playing santa out of the goodness of his heart, in about the same year i had asked santa for a bicycle. I WANTED a bike sooooo badly!!!!!!! i waited in my bed until santa had come and then i peeked out my door to see my my beloved new bike from santa. i have no idea if i ever shared that story with my parents before they each passed away. i know they are up in heaven laughing along with me. i loved my new bike and learned to ride it thanks to street curbs. i do believe santa lives in our heats just as christ does for the christian population. merry christmas on and all!!!!!!!

My mom used to write "from Santa" on some of our gifts, too. Of course, she also signed our dog's name to gifts, so that's kind of how we rolled in my house, on the edge of reality.

My parents did a very good job covering their tracks. My mom apparently had a hidden calligraphy talent, not to mention, the leftover cookie crumbles and "reindeer" bite marks on the carrots I left out were very convincing. I was told by some mean kids at school. I remember they had a whole crew of us "believers" gathered around them and took no mercy as they burst our Santa bubbles one by one. Such a lame way to find out. To this day, my mom still writes “From Santa” on some of my presents. Way to keep up the charade, Mom!

I never really believed. My dad has the world's most recognizable serial-killer handwriting, and all the notes from "Santa" were in the same chicken-scratch. Also, he told us that instead of cookies and milk, Santa actually preferred Twinkies and Diet Coke (my dad's favorites). I put two and two together pretty early on.

My parents were so elaborate with their scheme it was quite a while before I ever suspected anything. I would even vehemently defend Santa's existence to kids at school, using my Christmas experience as evidence. I was the kid that convinced jaded children that he was actually real. Eventually, my brain developed and I naturally became more skeptical, but was so impressed with the theatrics it wasn't the traumatizing experience it was for many kids.. Even though my brothers and I are grown up, they still go through with the charade....so I guess whether or not santa is real is still up for debate.

I don't remember the specifics of how this went down--I think I was a bit of a Santa skeptic from very early on--but I do remember feeling shocked that my parents were behind it all.

I think it was second grade; some mean kids made fun of me for still believing and I went home and asked my mom why they would make up such a terrible lie. I seem to remember her saying something along the lines of, "Well, why DO you still believe? I thought you knew he wasn't real!" Kind of out of character for my mom, but I think I caught her off guard. (Caught her off guard later that same school year when I asked her where babies came from and she referred me to the song playing on the radio, "Torn Between Two Lovers.") I kind of wish I'd never learned the truth; Santa's a fun thing to believe in. :)
