God’s Blanket

I went into San Francisco yesterday for lunch with a friend. There was a homeless man sitting in a doorway in the sun, smiling and looking at peace with the world. When our eyes met, I smiled at him and said, “Nice to see the sun after all the rain.” He responded, “The sun is God’s blanket for poor people. We do drugs all night, but when the sun comes out, we can sleep.” I expected an almost inevitable request for change, but it didn’t come.

Walking on ahead to meet my friend at the restaurant, I thought about what the man said for a moment. He does drugs all night and waits for the sun so he can sleep during the day. What a strange and sad way to live. I am glad he had a day in the sun.

Tomorrow’s forecast is for more rain; the homeless will have to do without God’s blanket.

I felt no disgust about the man at all. I wouldn't have spoken to him if I had. I do think "doing drugs all night" is a sad way to live. But I'm certainly not judging him. I really did not intend to convey "pity/disgust" at anyone's choices. I was glad that he had his day in the sun. But I was sad that he is possessed by narcotics.

Interesting the pity/disgust at this man's life choices. I would not choose it for myself but i can appreciate the simplicity of his choice and the sheer joy of a sunny day to this man. Is his addiction any worse than my addiction to comfort, TV, a glass of wine. We are often too busy, or too tired, or too "motivated" to enjoy God's blessings of a beautiful sunny day. I'm glad this man can.
Actually, that homeless man is more right than any of us. It's amazing how ignorant and arrogant we all are. Before we can judge that homeless man for his comment on life, maybe we should be opening our hearts and minds to compassion and love, because we all know how much we really need it, don't we?

I wonder how God would respond to that. The sun is a life giving event for growth and awakeness. It pulls us out into the light. Drugs turn people into Vampires They retreat from the light and the warmth and the call to begin a day of growth and productivity. I cannot imagine a day that is spent begging for money, then buying drugs or alcohol for the night and missing the blessing of the light. Life would seem to have little purpose and truly not much worth.
It feels good to write.
