How Do You Find Humor in Pain?

Gilda’s Club Greater Atlanta, an organization whose goal is to provide support for people living with cancer, puts on a Week of Laughter, where humor is used to alleviate the agonizing struggle of cancer. Attending the events, I was struck by the power of humor to heal. I’m not very good at making jokes from painful subjects. Are you? My oncologist warned me not to lose weight while on chemo. Well it is hard for most people to eat but I had a sweet tooth. The next time I saw the dr she congratulated me for not losing weight. I told her I bought a bag of sugar donuts and ate them all. It gave us both a good laugh.

IDK if Lilypearl12 is sill around. But perhaps you should study up on fibromyalgia and see if your doctor can sendyou to a speciast such as a ruethmitologist to be screened for fibromyalgia
I had breast Cancer at the age of 25. I am now 28 and the whole time I made jokes about being bald all the time, but the funniest moment I ever had is when a friend took me to a doctors appt. in her brand new ride. It was a nice day in May not to hot not to cold. I had on a wig that looked really really nice, but when you get a new car that has a sun roof and it's a nice day all the windows and the sunroof have to be open because it's not hot enough for air conditioner. So now were on the highway doing about 80 mph, my wig is starting to move, its inching off my head slowly but I feel it moving. So instead of asking her to maybe slow down or close the sunroof and maybe put the windows up a bit. "I scream your about to make my wig blow off". I thought it was funny so I was laughing hard. She looks over me and said that's not funny. I look back and say yes it is! I was laughing so hard she had no choice but to laugh. I still crack up now thinking about it.

Hello everyone, I am in pain today and everyday and I am sure there are several here on this site that are in the same shape. It sucks. I , along with others, wake up every morning with my whole body in pain. My doctors cannot find out what it is, or what is causing my pain. The worst of the pain is in my chest clear through to my back at my shoulder blades. I have had several test's and it's not my heart. I have had two (2) heart attacks before. My doctor's will not give me any pain killers. Can anyone suggest anything for me? Thanks.

I might be in the wrong place. I was reading the chat's and could relate with all about pain. I have pain but have not been told yet I have cancer anywhere. I have been through a lot of what I was reading from you all. I believe laughter is healing also. My question is, should I stay here and chat with you because I have the pain in common, or should I go and choose another place? I deal with pain everyday every minute of my life. Help.

Read my story The Purple Nama Monster. You have no choice but to laugh. What's the alternative? Being happy is a choice, so is being angry, and sad. So have a good laugh:)

I too am a cancer survivor. I believe that when our experiential thresholds are challenged and stretched we also develop an enhanced propensity for joy. The harder I cry....the harder I will be able to laugh. Some pains take you into the depths of yourself where you can see the capacity that you are born with for survival. Now that I have experienced that...the physical agonies of life have just become surprising reminders of the fact that I am alive. It is ludicrous what we can go through, laughter is the only authentic and appropriate response.
