Are Some Styles Off-Limits to Older Women?

A recent article in the New York Times asked, “Why can’t middle-aged women have long hair?” Millions of style experts and well-meaning grandmothers have admonished that long, flowing locks are solely the province of the young, as are sleeveless tops, miniskirts, knee-high boots, and bikinis. Plenty of people believe that regardless of how a woman looks or feels, some styles are simply inappropriate for a woman of a certain age. What do you think? Is a woman with long hair desperately clinging to her youth or is she entitled to dress and style herself as she pleases?

I think a women regardless of her age is entitled to dress and style herself as she pleases. However- we go through various changes as we mature and advance in age. As a result we feel , think and act differently. I had long hair up untill a month ago- one day out of the blue I simple felt like cutting my hair- so I did. I felt so releaved afterwards. Believe it or no,t I felt 10 lbs. lighter and so free! I haven't regreted doing so at all. In fact I'll never let it grow pass my shoulders again. Its so care free. It doesn't matter what people think- its all about what the women feels and thinks-about herself!

I like to wear my hair in different styles. I find longer hair gives me more choices. Wether a flattering updo, a slicked back ponytail, soft long waves. If my hair looks good I feel good whatever my age. I choose to be comfortable in every season, I'll wear a cardigan in winter, a tank top in summer, shorts too if I want . I'm not a "Top Model" type, but I choose to be who I am and not worry about pleasing everyone else. Who created the "your too old for that "committie anyway?

I used to spend about 300.00 with a stylist because of extra long hair that was charged more for trims and special conditionings and glosses...those days are over(I'm on disability) so I trim my own ends and do buy the best hair products I can afford. I also make sure I have the diet and supplements (omegas 3 and 6) etc. Also headstands are great for my scalp(sending blood to the head )and all that goes with yoga...also a sunscreen is necessary for the hair in winter and summer.

As long as hair is healthy and you manage appropriately, then you can do what ever you choose. It is far more important to have healthy hair than hair of a certain length....Also, if a woman is in great shape, there is no reason why she can't bare her arms, wear low rise jeans or even wear a miniskirt.

...Oh and about Hair lengths for women..I Feel as long as the Hairstyle is suitable for the womans face and shes happy with it, go with it!

Yes...No Low-Rise Jeans for any classy, grown woman over the age of 30!! A Lady must always Dress like a Grown Woman and no low-rise jeans with panties showing. So Un-Classy!!

I have long, wavy, naturally blonde hair and I don't care what the hair police think. It feels good, I love touching my waves and at age 60 it 's still healthy and shiny.

A woman is absolutely entitled to wear her hair long if she wishes to. I'm 65 and my hair is down to my waist.
I decided that I also wanted to enjoy the normal hair as it changes color. My ends deserve a trim, but I plan to keep on letting it grow. Who cares.....I remember a time when women never cut their hair and it reached the floor! If you want long hair....I say...."You go girl"!

I think it all depends on how your hair itself has aged---for example, my mother's hair has thinned considerably as she has gotten older and she needs to keep it short or it looks straggly. If your hair is still thick and easy to style, then by all means it can be long. I say these "rules" not to limit freedom, but just for ladies' hair to flatter them the best.
