Fall 2012 Fashion Week: Beautiful Buns at KAELEN and Tadashi

At the KAELEN presentation, lead stylist Anthony Campbell from Cutler/Redken salons created a retro, Old Hollywood look—very Marlene Dietrich.

“We did a deep left-side part,” Campbell said, “but with shine and a little bit of texture on the side, coming back into a really clean bun.” The stylists started by blowing models’ hair dry using Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray for volume and control.

“To get the wave in front,” Campbell said, “Make two sections, and use a half-inch curling iron to make a little bit of a dent.” Then they used Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray to create a sleek bun.

“It’s an androgynous look,” Campbell said, “Almost kind of like a woman being made into a man.”

At the Tadashi Shoji show, celebrity stylist Rodney Cutler (who created Emma Watson’s world-famous pixie cut) used Redken products to create a soft, but clean and strong variation on a chignon. “The clothes are so beautiful and glam,” he said, “We don’t want the hair to be too overstated.”

Cutler started by making a strong side part and blow-drying each model’s hair with Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray and Nature’s Rescue Sea Spray. “It’s all about texture,” Cutler said. “Once you create the right texture, updos are really quite simple.” The he fashioned the hair into a low ponytail, which he backcombed slightly to create volume, then fastened with an elastic.

Next, Cutler started rolling up the ponytail from the bottom, to create an airy roll at the base of the neck. Cutler recommends fastening a look like this with real hairpins, which hold better than bobby pins.

“Then we ruffle out the side, “Cutler said. “Pull out the heaver side to give it a little airiness and make it more editorial” Finish with a spritz of Redken Fashion Work 12 to set the style.

The makeup for the Tadashi show was done by MAC artist Luc Bouchard, who created a minimal look that featured groomed brows, lush lashes, and a deep red lip.

Bouchard used MAC Skin Smoother, a foundation-like primer that contains light-deflecting particles to even skin tone. Available this Spring, it can be used under foundation or instead of. The look was finished off with a touch of MAC Lipmix in Crimson, which was applied gently in order to look as if it had been pressed into the lips.
