I also cut and razor my own hair, but dying my hair scares me. I have only dyed my hair twice and shy away from permanent hair color. I just don't want to lose my natural color.
Anyone care to share the name and location of their Portland Oregon stylist? Particularly if they area in the NE section...
My hair has a wave is primarily silver, naturally and I love a dry itself after shampoo look...

I too, have learned to cut and color my own, A long time ago I would spend any amount for a good cut. But now a days I just can't see spending that much, I went online and viewed a video on cutting layers yourself, she combed all her hair in front of herself while bending over from the waist, and then cut, she does a great job explaining and now I can do a great job on my own. The money I save, I think I'll go "cold stone ice cream" ALL WEEK!!!

I go to a curly hair specialist - she costs under $80 with tip and I drive like 40 minutes to get to her!

I actually have learned to cut (and color) my own hair. I have been doing it for years and also cut my son's and sometimes my friends hair. I have saved so much money this way. People will comment on my hair and ask who my stylist is? I smile and simply say, "me" :-)!

My hair cut cost me $20, and that is with tip. And if I'm at my mom's (she has a cosmetology license), she'll cut it for me. When I was younger, I did all the chemical processing most Black American females do. About 15 years ago, in college, I decided enough was enough and went back to a natural. Now, I can go to barber. I refuse to spend that much money on dead cells. I have a crochet habit to feed:)

I currently work in the beauty and cosmetology department at my school and sometimes, the hairstylists and their students do free haircuts. So, it's very cool to see that, but my best friend does my hair {cut, color, adding volume and length, etc} and I basically pay for the supplies. So, it doesn't cost me any more than $100-$125 a year.

I spent my twenties (and my thirties) making appointments at beauty schools and lesser-renowned stylists and colorists to save money. And I ended up with pink hair, a pixie cut I didn't want, and a whole string of bad styles. And here's what I learned: a haircut I feel good about makes me happy, and if it's under $150 since I only do it three times a year, I'm fine with that. So I pay to go to Michelle, the most fantastic hair cutter ever (I'm sure there's a better word for her) and she's $125 a pop - but she cuts my hair so it looks good while it's growing out and I love it. (She's also a stylist to the stars, so she's up on all the latest cuts!) I pay Michael $90 every two months to color me, and twice a year he gets $225 to tint and highlight. I don't buy expensive shoes or bags, so I get good haircuts at Cowboys & Angels in San Francisco and I'm more than happy to part with my money every time - because I love what they do, I feel good when I leave, and my hair isn't PINK!

I'm with Vanessa on this. I will drive an hour out of the city to visit my mom for a free haircut--that's how cheap I am. I once volunteered as a hair model to get a free cut out of the deal, and ended up with a significantly lopsided bob. I didn't mind. You know why? Free ...

Because I have such excessively curly hair, it's hard for me to find a stylist I like and trust. My stylist in the last city I lived in was amazing, and every time I left the salon I felt like a million bucks. Including a tip, that cost me about $175 bucks each time. But if I could find someone else who could reliably make my hair look that good, I'd happily pay it again.
