Brown Skin

You’re Cute to Be Brown Skin, I Once Heard
And I Thought What Does That Mean.
Did It Mean Brown Skin Girls
Are Supposed To Be Ugly?
I Mean Yes My Skin is Brown and
I thought I was Happy With It,
But Light Skinned Girls Seemed to Have More Confidence.
The Boys Would Flock To Them,
Like Honey On A Bee,
But Hey I Was The Cool Girl
So Everybody Liked Me.
My Skin I Thought Was Okay,
But Deep Down At Times
I Wished I Was A Lighter Shade.
Was a Lighter Shade Better?
I Think Society Has Our Community Trained,
That if Your Skin Is Light
You Are Better Than Those With a Darker Shade.
Statements Like, Light is Right and if You’re Black Get Back.
Your Cute to Be Brown Skin or
I Never Met a Dark Skin Girl,
With Long Hair That Wasn’t Weave.
What Kind of Statements Are These and
How Were You Brought Up to Even Believe,
The Color of My Skin Determined My Cuteness or State in Society.
Well I Must Confess, I Use to Be Depressed
Because of The Shade of My Skin,
But That’s a Thing of The Past,
I Love The Hue That I’m In.
So When The Next Person Comes Along and
Says Your Cute to Be Brown Skin
Just Look at Them and Smile,
You Know Your True Worth Within!

Such an honest and refreshing perspective on the concept of true beauty. I am light-skinned too, and was always jealous of those with darker or lighter skin than mine! Always hated being in the middle!! :) I never thought of the point of view you express here. Great poem, Nicole!
Nicole I'm very proud of you. Just think, I didn't even know that you were interested in writing poetry. This is a very nice poem and it has a very strong meaning. I'm the light-skin girl you are talking about in this poem and believe it or not, we go through similar things (i.e., just because we are light, we think we better than everybody). Yeah right!!! I've heard that mess a million times. We all bleed the same color. Society has taught us to be prejudice within our own race. That's horrible!! Keep up the good work Cuz!!! I love you.
