Should You Buy Organic Produce?

We all know adding an organic label to food doesn’t necessarily make it superior. So, are the extra dollars really worth it?

Simply opting for a less processed diet, with more fruits and vegetables, would be a vast improvement for many people.

And I for one, am quite aware of my grocery bill these days. I don’t want to be forking out on organic produce if it isn’t really any better.

However, it seems for some produce there is good reason to shop organic.

If things like supporting small local farmers and reducing your intake of chemicals and pesticides are important to you, then you should consider including more organic foods in your diet.

It pretty obvious, but some foods will have lower levels of pesticide residue than others, particularly fruits and vegetables with thicker peels or skins to protect the inside contents.

Those least contaminated by pesticides include:

  • Asparagus
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Sweet corn
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Onions
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet peas

Particularly if you’re on a tight budget, buying the organic varieties of these items isn’t really worthwhile.

But, some foods are more likely to absorb pesticides, and therefore it’s considered healthier to purchase the organic versions.
