Eating Healthy

As I’ve gotten older,  I have started eating healthy and naturally am concerned about the things I feed my family. My youngest granddaughter loves fast food, even as a baby she said “Hot hot!” every time she saw the golden arches (which is what we always said when feeding her fries when she was little).

In this day and age, fast food is more a convenience than an occasional treat. Having really studied fast food, I try to encourage her to eat healthier too. One night she asked if she could have a happy meal for dinner. I replied that we could stop and get a toy, but I could make them for her at home and asked if she would like to try mine. She agreed and that was the beginning of my fry cook career.

So we went home and I partially defrosted some boneless chicken breasts and sliced them into two inch bits. I peeled potatoes and sliced them into fires. The first time I made them she was surprised.

“This is really good! The nuggets are the best I ever had and your fries taste just like the real thing! “She seemed really impressed. I thought back to when I was a child. With six children, my parents never took us out to eat; we ate before we left the house and knew not to ask for fast food.

“Well” I said, “before there was Mickey D’s, there were potatoes.” Now when we pass a fast food place, she asks if we can go home and make chicken nuggets and fries for dinner. She actually prefers mine!
