Friday the Queen of Pop turns 30—with two kids, a couple of failed marriages, one Lifetime Achievement Award, dozens of chart-topping songs and videos, a meltdown or two, a comeback, a python, and red pleather cat suit in her rear view mirror. Girl’s been busy since she arrived on the music scene as a teenager in pig tails and knee-highs!
Of course, Britney’s stardom is not for everyone—a rather public meltdown and pop music in general can be quite polarizing. One of our staff writers admits that her workout playlists consist mostly of Britney music while another said that the star’s auto-tuned voice sounds as if she is about to cough something up. But regardless of where you fall on the Britney-fan continuum, there’s no question that she’s been one hell of a cultural force. We’ve practically grown up with Britney. Personally I spent the better part of middle school and high school practicing her dance routines during recess and lunch breaks. I still know the moves to “Hit Me Baby One More Time” (and just by typing that name, I’m now guaranteed to have it stuck in my head until next week).
